Developmental milestones, responsiveness and sleep.

I am continously explaining to parent’s that my approach to child sleep challenges are different to a sleep consultant as I am a specialist public child health practitioner.

My approach and sleep plans, encorporate developmental milestones and the way we respond to children’s behaviours when they can’t sleep. When babies’and children find sleeping difficult, they are observing the parents verbal and non verbal behaviours to sense if everything is ok? If infants feel secure than the sleep challenges will resolve. If a black and white approach is used, then the child’s sleep may resolve temporaily, but the sleep difficulties may shortly return in a more prominant state. How we respond is crucial to a child’s overall healthy development and relationship between parent and child.

Well known, recently deceased peadiatrician Terry Brazelton explains this important relationship.
